Why Cycles Big Iron V2 Titanium Fat Bike

The Big Iron is built around the new standard 27.5” fat bike wheels with clearance for up to 27.5×4.5” or 26×5” tires.  This modern titanium steed will be your trusty companion on any snow or soft-surface endeavor. The crew at Why goes way back to the early days of fat biking in Alaska, and the Big Iron is the culmination of years of fat biking experience combined with modern design features, and an engineering oversight to optimize Why’s titanium tubing to the rigorous riding the Big Iron is made for.

Named after the the famous Marty Robbins song, the Big Iron is designed to be a tool to get the job done. Whether its a short weekend jaunt on the local groomed single track or an epic 1100 mile journey across Alaska, the modern geometry, stiff-yet-supple titanium frame, and lifetime warranty make this a bike you’ll be proud to take anywhere that requires big tires.

BECAUSE TITANIUM IS MAGIC

Why Cycles makes their bikes from the best materials possible for a wide variety of terrain. They use the highest quality Grade 9 3/2.5 titanium for their frames’ tubing, and 6/4 titanium for the head tube, bottom bracket shell, and machined bits all over the frame.

The wonder material has so many excellent ride quality attributes: 43% lighter than steel, higher strength-weight ratio than aluminum, significantly more resistant to crash-damage than carbon, and the best vibration damping properties of all three listed here.

We think you’ll agree that they achieved their goal of creating titanium frames with a modern twist by engineering guided internal cable routing, stealth dropper post routing, integrated headsets, and threaded bottom brackets. For riders who want a high-end, comfortable, fast bike built to last a lifetime, we believe a properly made titanium frame is the best option.

How our Builds Differ from the Stock Why Cycle’s Build:

  •  We start with the industry’s most reliable high engagement wheelset; The Corvus Big SU! The Big Su’s highlights are the high engagement hub and the 6 pall driver. We also use the HED BHAD wheelset which is the lightest aluminum wheel on the market! The stock Why Cycle’s build includes the Sun Ringle Mule Fut which is a heavier and less reliable
    entry level wheelset.
  • Why Cycles uses a Bontrager Fork. We use a higer quality Enve Fork!
  •  To go along with the long standing durability of the Why Cycles Ti frame, we have
assembled components that match that reliability and quality versus the stock build
  •  Like with most models that we carry we offer multiple tire options; both studdable and non-studdable

Other Build Options:

  • Higher end drivetrains and components potentially available upon request!
  • Total custom builds also available to create your ultimate dream machine. This can include coloured ONYX hubs, coloured wolf tooth bling kits, plus more!

I’ve been riding my Big Iron for about a week and I have to say, this bike is amazing. Coming from a fairly run of the mill aluminum bike that I have been riding for about seven years, it was like going from a dump truck to a Ferrari. It handles like a regular trail bike, despite the huge tires and wheels. You can actually flick this bike through corners, something you can’t usually say about a fatty. The ride is very smooth, and very quiet. Got it set up with Fatback Big Su wheels and the much improved 45NRTH Dillinger studded tires, running tubeless. The bike rolls well, climbs like a homesick angel, even with my stout body, and pedals with no detectable frame deflection. It also looks great. The welds are perfect, all the hardware looks solid and the etched graphics are understated and very attractive. If you are both a fat bike and a Marty Robbins fan, this bike is perfect. Just can’t say anything bad about this bike. Top notch lightweight fat bike, it’s expensive but worth every penny.

Why Cycles Big Iron: I bought the Big Iron from the awesome people at FatbikesCanada looking for a fatbike to ride in the winter with the plan to move back to the carbon full suspension for the rest of the year. The thing is, the Big Iron is so fun and amazing to ride it gets time on the trails year-around. Remove the studded tires and you have an awesome hardtail that rolls over big rubble and technical stuff super well. I makes some of this type of terrain so easy and sweet. I wasn’t originally going to pay the $ for a Ti frame but because of supply-chain issues a couple years ago, we went ahead and jumped in to prevent waiting months for another fatbike. Wow!! The investment was so worth it! Somehow that Ti (and fat wheels) just smooth out the ride so beautifully. But this ain’t your Daddy’s Caddy boat type of ride. You still need to be active and engaged because the Big Iron likes to flow and rip — it loves a riding style that leans into that. If you can reallocate the funds from something that is non-essential, consider the carbon rims for awesome acceleration and climbing!
