Our years of testing different types of apparel have led us to a few conclusions as to what works best for different types of riding weather.

Fatbike Winter Extreme Cold

Core Principles of Fat Biking

1. Riding a bike is an Aerobic sport. You will sweat and regardless of the temperature you need to ensure you stay dry and your layers breathe enough to handle it. Wet skin draws away heat from the body which will cause the most discomfort and, in some conditions, can cause hypothermia

2. Your extremities do not stay warm. Feet on pedals do not have the same circulation as feet on the ground walking. Your hands are also doing a lot of work gripping your bars and controlling your bike. Maintaining the best circulation and moisture movement away from these contact points is essential to a fun ride.

3. Frosty Beard! Not all of us have the protection of a lumberjack. Exposed skin can experience frostbite quickly in temps below -10c but covering up isn’t always that easy. Your breathing can turn your typical neck tube into a wet and frozen mess and removal can leave exposed skin vulnerable.

The fun factor is NOT weather dependent. Especially here in Canada we deal with a wide range of conditions that are constantly changing and often teetering on the edge of the extreme. One day it’s -5°C and sunny, the next it’s -35°C and a polar vortex.

It’s been said that we get all 4 seasons in one day sometimes. Being prepared is essential in our climate. Proper layering systems allow riders and outdoor enthusiasts to keep the good times rolling all year long regardless of conditions. If you’re bombing down hills you should throw on your windproof shell.

If you know a whole lot of climbing is coming up it’s better to open the air vents or take off the shell completely. This is the power and useability of layering systems. The last thing you want to do is be a sweaty puddle in your gear when the cold rolls in. Breathability is key and don’t forget, your body works like a furnace. It can be better to start your ride being a bit cold than risk overheating.

#1 - Baselayers

A proper layering system always begins with a quality baselayer. This is the piece of gear which is making direct contact with your skin. FBC is incredibly confident in endorsing the Craft Active ExtremeX CN Long Sleeve and pants baselayer kit with a BN3TH chamois underneath. This is the best combination to begin with for every layering system except for sometimes in the Fall/Spring when you don’t need as much warmth.

We choose a synthetic baselayer system because merino wool is warm when wet but doesn’t move moisture quite like synthetics. Your core perspires quicker than most wool can handle. Merino wool, however, is a great choice for your extremities as the hollow long strand fibers do work to keep feet and hands warm and dry. Below we break down best baselayer system for winter adventures.

BN3TH North Shore Chamois short:

  • Features BN3TH’s first of its kind patent-pending (Sea-to-Sky) STS Pad™ and patented MyPakage Pouch Technology™ to support your boys
  • Ionic+™ technology to prevent the stink before it starts for multi day use

The BN3TH North Shore Chamois Short is the best chamois available! This is a definite shop fave!  All the guys at the shop much prefer these over traditional chammies! They fit like regular undies and have a special pocket for the package in the front and are antimicrobial. This especially  helps when you are bikepacking and must wear the same piece of gear for a couple days. They stay in place and don’t cause chafing which can be a huge problem some people have when not using a full bib system. What more can you ask for?

Blivet Udones Socks:

  • The base of the foot is lined with Dri-release wool for added warmth and Sofi-Lite Fiber from the ankle up for increased breathability
  • These socks go up under the knee for excellent compression support at all times and to prevent them from slipping down

The Blivet Udones Socks are a standout choice to keep your extremities warm no matter what. Having the extra wool at the base of the foot and the more breathable fibres above the ankle create the perfect combination of warmth and function. This is because your toes are always the first thing to feel the chill. If these socks still aren’t enough for your toes which will be the case for some people, you should add some disposable toe warmers. NO COLD FEET!

Craft Active ExtremeX CN Long Sleeve Baselayer:

  • Uses a blend of SEAQUAL™ polyester, Coolmax® Air Technology and recycled polyester to provide exceptional body-temperature management during high-intensity activities
  • Utilizing a unique propeller-shaped cross-section, the fabric provides excellent thermoregulation for optimal performance

The Craft Active ExtremeX is the #1 Baselayer on the market. The polyester blend wicks moisture and dries out a lot quicker than merino wool during very high output activity when it is under multiple layers. Being wet in these cold temperatures can create a dangerous situation. It is also priced significantly lower than most of the competition especially when matched up against merino wool alternatives. Stay warm, dry, and confident all winter long with this perfect baselayer.

45NRTH Stavanger Merino Wool Cap:

  • Merino wool blend for warmth and breathability. Fitted, with low-profile seaming for optimal comfort under your helmet
  • Curved shape covers your ears and back of neck for ample protection

The 45NRTH Stavanger Merino Wool Cap holds onto all that precious heat that escapes from your head. This is the lightweight option in 45NRTH’s lineup for when the days aren’t too frigid. It provides great protection for your ears and the back of your neck. The cap wicks moisture incredibly well and is fitted and low profile for optimal comfort under your helmet. Throw it on and forget it!

#2 - Fall/Spring MTB

The following is the kit we recommend for those days during the shorter transition seasons when It’s not too cold out, but short sleeves and pants just won’t cut it! These seasons also include periods where the mornings and evenings can be brisk, and the midday can be warmer.

This means you want to be able to bundle up to combat the cold and maybe shed a layer when you heat up. Generally, this system would be ideal for temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C. Fall/spring weather is where you must begin to protect your extremities (hands/feet) from the cold without overdoing it.

There is however more leeway during these times since the temperature generally does not drop enough to become dangerous if you get too sweaty.

#3 - Fall/Winter Gravel

The next layering system is ideal for colder fall weather into the beginning of winter before it gets extremely cold. This kit is also form fitting and lightweight for gravel or road riding in order to reduce drag from the wind.

Generally, this system would be ideal for temperatures ranging from – 5°C to 10°C. This is where you need to put more of an emphasis on protecting your extremities for a comfortable ride.

We find being a touch cold when starting your ride is ideal for this temperature as it can be easy to overheat when wearing too much. The weather during this time can also see a wide range of temps throughout the day if you are out there for many hours. Its necessary to adapt to these changes and not overdo it with this system.

#4 - Winter Fatbike Active 1

Now we are getting into the colder temperatures that you will come across when winter has taken full effect. Here we really begin to find the need to trap the heat that our body produces while still maintaining breathability.

Once again, we need to protect our hands, head, and especially our feet with a more highly insulated boot. Generally, this system would be ideal for temperatures ranging from -10°C to 0°C.

This setup is also flexible. It can be used for a slightly wider temperature range depending on leaving out or adding in layers. Since some people run hot and some cold it could take a bit of experience during this time to see exactly what works for you. Luckily, we give you the best base to start with.

If you want a race ready fatbike this is the bike you want to get your hands on! #5 - Winter Fatbike Active 2

The ensuing system is taking us into all but the most extreme cold weather winter can dish out. Here we need protect ourselves from frigid temps and usually an abundance of snow. You need waterproof gear to ensure your clothing doesn’t soak through from the external environment.

This can be a dangerous time of year if you aren’t prepared accordingly. Generally, this system would be ideal for temperatures ranging from -20°C – 10°C. As always, we need to stay warm without turning into a wet mess. Overall, it is harder to overheat at these temperatures, but it still occurs.

You really need a seriously warm and insulated boot especially when you are riding all day long with lots of starts and stops. Your boots need to keep you warm even when you are not in an active state. Stay warm and safe this winter!
